Ob Nixilis EDH Deck

Ob Nixilis, the Fallen
Here's a monoblack Elder Dragon Highlander deck featuring Ob Nixilis, the Fallen as the deck's commander.

There are a number of other legendary creatures in the deck, so you can pick and choose which one you want as your commander. I tend to stick with ObNoxious, I mean, Ob Nixilis as my commander because of some of the landfetch cards I have in the deck.

For those unfamiliar with the EDH format, the deck is exactly 100 cards with one of them being the commander. The commander must be a legendary creature. In addition, you can only have one copy of each card (excluding basic lands).

The format is a great deal of fun and is often played as a multiplayer format. I highly suggest checking it out.

Anyway, on with the list!

Commander: Ob Nixilis, the Fallen

Lands (39)
  • 15x Swamp
  • 14x Snow-Covered Swamp (used mainly to help negate Tainted Pact)
  • Bad River (better landfetch cards could replace this)
  • Cabal Coffers
  • Crypt of Agadeem
  • Ghost Quarter
  • Ghost Town
  • Spawning Pool
  • Strip Mine
  • Terminal Moraine
  • Terramorphic Expanse
  • Thawing Glaciers
Not much to say about the lands except for their interaction with Ob Nixilis. Ghost Town and Thawing Glaciers does a lot to improve on the commander's +1/+1 tokens, so use them frequently. In a pinch, use Ghost Quarter to destroy one of your own lands just to get another Swamp into play.

Creatures (22)
  • Avatar of Woe
  • Bane of the Living
  • Big Game Hunter
  • Blood Seeker
  • Bone Shredder
  • Doomed Necromancer
  • Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief
  • Dread
  • Faceless Butcher
  • Gatekeeper of Malakir
  • Kagemaro, First to Suffer
  • Korlash, Heir to Blackblade
  • Laquatus's Champion
  • Maga, Traitor to Mortals
  • Mindslicer
  • Mirri the Cursed
  • Myojin of Night's Reach
  • Nekrataal
  • Nightmare
  • Soot Imp
  • Vampire Nighthawk
  • Withered Wretch
As you can see, the creature list is a little on the thin side - most of them fall into several categories of either removal, retrieval, or heavy hitter.

Spells (20)
  • Barter in Blood
  • Beseech the Queen
  • Consume Spirit
  • Damnation
  • Dark Banishing
  • Decree of Pain
  • Demonic Tutor
  • Diabolic Edict
  • Diabolic Intent
  • Drain Life
  • Innocent Blood
  • Mutilate
  • Plague Wind
  • Rise from the Grave
  • Sadistic Sacrament
  • Stir the Grave
  • Stitch Together
  • Tainted Pact
  • Vampiric Tutor
  • Zombify
Most of the spells listed fall into the removal or retrieval categories, and you'll notice a good deal of creature kill. This is to ensure your heavy hitters have a relatively clean board to attack on.

Other Permanents (19)
  • Amulet of Unmaking
  • Animate Dead
  • Crucible of Worlds
  • Curse of Wizardry
  • Grave Pact
  • Lightning Greaves
  • Liliana Vess
  • Mana Vault
  • Necromancy
  • Necropotence
  • Nevinyrral's Disk
  • Nightmare Lash
  • Oversold Cemetery
  • Phyrexian Arena
  • Sensei's Divining Top
  • Skullclamp
  • Sol Ring
  • Zuran Orb
Again we see more removal and retrieval, as well as some mana generation and utility cards. Lightning Greaves is a great artifact to equip on the commander, making him untargetable and granting haste.

Sideboard (10)
  • Crawlspace
  • Deathgrip
  • Emissary of Despair
  • Engineered Plague
  • Infernal Darkness
  • Gate to Phyrexia
  • Perish
  • Stench of Evil
  • Trinisphere
  • Yawgmoth's Edict
The sideboard is meant to penalize green and/or white decks, and has several useful cards for dealing with artifact-heavy decks, which black usually has a problem combating.
