Mayael the Anima Commander/EDH Deck

Mayael the Anima
Here's a legend with a nifty ability just ripe to use as a commander. Mayael the Anima has a low mana cost and a powerful ability - six mana can net you some of the largest creatures ever to see play!

Since this is a Commander deck, we already know what colors we have to choose from. Green is king of the beasts, while red and white have some great additions as well as removal options.

Mayael's throwing a party of the biggest and baddest, so let's see who's on the guest list!

A Deck Based On: Seismic Assault

Seismic Assault
While a decent card on its own, Seismic Assault lends itself to making a deck around. Discarding a land to basically Shock something? Not a bad tradeoff, as long as you have the lands to spare.

Now how are we going to go about getting a ton of lands into our hand? By going green, of course! We're also splashing in a touch of white for some classic cards that deal with lands.

This is the kind of deck that simply enjoys mana clumps, so it's a win-win no matter what you draw.

Let the assault begin!

A Deck Based On: Varchild's War-Riders

Time for another quirky card to base a deck on! This time I'm using Varchild's War-Riders, which is an old card from the Alliances expansion and re-released in Magic Online's Masters Edition.

A mere two mana nets you a 3/4 creature with trample and rampage 1... but it has a drawback. It keeps giving your opponent 1/1 token creatures, and after a while those survivors are going to come back and get you!

Thankfully, red is already the main color of direct damage, and for good measure we're adding in black as well.

Time to ride into war!

A Deck Based on: Lhurgoyf

LhurgoyfSomething I find fun is to find a quirky card and base a deck around it. I often hear friends name some random card and say,  "What good is this card?", and I'll usually be able to come up with some combos with their supposedly useless card.

Today, I'm going to show off a deck based on a somewhat-quirky card that has a long history in Magic: the Lhurgoyf.

The Lhurgoyf is an iconic MtG card, spawning a number of similar cards - including more luhrgoyfs such as the Magnivore, Mortivore, and Tarmogoyf.

What makes the original somewhat of an oddball is that its ability is more suited to that of a black card than green. Black is the traditional color of graveyard love, so you have to work a bit to make green want a bunch of creatures in graveyards.

Time to dig up the list!

Jolrael Commander/EDH Deck

Jolrael, Empress of Beasts
This deck focuses on getting as many lands out as possible then using them to beat the opponent down!

Not only does this commander's ability want you to have a lot of lands out, but so does many of the other cards in the deck.

You will definitely have to watch out for any major land destruction players, as they will cripple this deck severely - as this list doesn't yet include a sideboard, you may want to keep this in mind when building your own.

And now the list!

Borborygmos EDH Deck "History of Beatdown"

BorborygmosThis deck features Borborygmos as its commander, but really any red/green legendary creature could suffice. It's not so much about the commander as it is the rest of the deck here.

This is what I call a "history" deck because not only is it Highlander format, but it also contains only one card from every set up through the Zendikar block. The original version of the deck was only 60 cards and stopped at the oldschool card format, thus I called it a "history" deck.

Not only will I display the deck, but also the set each card is from. Building a history deck is very challenging as you must pick one card from each set that fits your deck theme... then you have to go collect any cards you're missing which can be a task for those older sets!
On to the list!

Ob Nixilis EDH Deck

Ob Nixilis, the Fallen
Here's a monoblack Elder Dragon Highlander deck featuring Ob Nixilis, the Fallen as the deck's commander.

There are a number of other legendary creatures in the deck, so you can pick and choose which one you want as your commander. I tend to stick with ObNoxious, I mean, Ob Nixilis as my commander because of some of the landfetch cards I have in the deck.

For those unfamiliar with the EDH format, the deck is exactly 100 cards with one of them being the commander. The commander must be a legendary creature. In addition, you can only have one copy of each card (excluding basic lands).

The format is a great deal of fun and is often played as a multiplayer format. I highly suggest checking it out.
